Application Notes
Denso 10S20F - 4 Groove Clutch 4-5/16" Diameter, .65" Gauge Line - Check Condenser For Debris!!! - Requires Use Of Original Pressure Switch

This Denso 10S20F replacement A/C Compressor interchanges to several other 10S units, including the 10S17F.  It mounts identical to that unit, but has 30cc additional capacity.  It will also replace the 10S17F and 10S20F without-switch compressors.  While most commonly used on vehicles with rear A/C, this compressor will fit and function fine on front A/C systems.

This unit comes with a plug in the rear switch port.  If your unit is equipped with a rear pressure switch, that switch will need to be removed, carefully, from the old unit and transferred to this one.  The switch is held in with a small internal snap ring.  The snap ring must be reinstalled bevelled (rounded) side facing out.

Mounted low on the passenger side of the engine, the original compressor on Chevy and GMC Trucks and Suburbans has experienced a very high failure rate.  When the A/C system is not running, oil naturally drains to the lowest point, which happens to be the A/C compressor on these trucks.  Oil pools in the lower compressor cylinders.  When the air conditioning is turned on, the compressor pistons 'ram' the oil through the valve and reed assembly.  At best, the valve reeds bend, and some compression(and cooling) is lost.  Usually, however, one or more of the valve reeds snaps off, bounces around in the compressor, and causes all kinds of internal and system damage.  In some cases, the compressor is locked up so quickly that the drive belt snaps off.

Our replacement 10S20F compressor (and, to be fair, the new ACDelco unit) has re-engineered valve and reed assemblies, designed to be thicker and much more durable than the original unit used on the Chevrolet and GMC trucks.

P0530 and A/C Compressor does not turn on - The P0530 code is a high side pressure sensor code.  Most likely, the cause of this code (and the reason that A/C Compressor will not turn on) is because of a damaged wire.  The harness from the pressure sensor runs between the oil pan and the transmission cooler lines.  There, you may see a 90 degree bend in the wires.  If you peel the loom back, you'll probably find the damaged wires.  The bad section can simply be cut out, and the remaining ends spliced back together.

Removal and installation time is 1.4 hours for 2 wheel drive, 1.6 hours for 4 wheel drive.

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement - Sample vehicle is a 2005 Silverado V8 5.3.  Most vehicles will use the same procedures.

Removal Procedure

Note: Compressor is most easily accessed through the right front wheelwell.

1.  Recover the refrigerant.
2.  Remove the intake air resonator replacement.
3.  Install a ratchet into the air conditioning (A/C) belt tensioner adapter opening.
4.  Rotate the A/C belt tensioner clockwise in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
5.  Remove the A/C belt from the A/C compressor.
6.  Slowly release the tension on the A/C belt tensioner.

7.  Remove the discharge hose bolt from the A/C compressor.
8.  Remove the discharge hose from the A/C compressor.
9.  Remove the suction hose bolt from the A/C compressor.
10.  Remove the suction hose from the A/C compressor.
11.  Discard the sealing washers. Cap all of the openings.
12.  Disconnect the electrical connections.
13.  Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
14.  Remove the A/C compressor (2) from the bracket (1).
15.  If replacing the A/C compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing. (this compressor comes with a full charge of oil)

Installation Procedure

1.  Install the A/C compressor (2) to the A/C bracket (1).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

1.  Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
    Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

3.  Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
4.  Install the A/C discharge hose to the compressor using new sealing washers.
5.  Install the A/C discharge hose bolt to the A/C compressor.
    Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

6.  Install the A/C suction hose to the compressor using new sealing washers.
7.  Install the A/C suction hose bolt to the A/C compressor.
    Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

8.  Install the intake air resonator replacement.
9.  Install the A/C drive belt.
10.  Evacuate and recharge the A/C system.
11.  Leak test the fittings of the components.

The Accumulator or Filter Drier should always be replaced when the Air Conditioning System is opened.  (see why)  The Orifice Tube, if equipped, should always be replaced and the Expansion Valve, if equipped, should at least be inspected for proper operation if not replaced.  (see why)
